Enigma: research, Smart Grids

To make the safety and reliability of the electrical system of the future possible

What is Project Enigma?

Enigma – Electric Grid AI is the winning project of the second edition of the Grid2030 program, promoted by Red Eléctrica de España (REE) and arises from the collaboration of three Spanish companies: Ingelectus, Hi-Iberia, a company that develops software and ICT solutions, and Prysma, a consultancy specializing in technological development.

Transmission system operators (TSOs) need innovative ideas to ensure the security and reliability of the electricity system while guaranteeing quality at all levels. Renewable energy sources are playing an increasingly prominent role in the electricity system, and TSOs must consider all the new capabilities these sources can offer and use them to optimize network operation.

What solutions does Enigma offer?

Within the Enigma project, a tool is being developed to help REE (Red Eléctrica de España) define how new energy sources connected to the transmission grid, such as solar, wind, and storage, should behave. In other words, any Transmission System Operator (TSO) will be able to define the behavior of these elements to optimize the system’s frequency response, since these new energy sources are connected using power electronics that allow for a wide operating range.

With this tool, Enigma will be able to simulate the dynamic behavior of the electrical system and the renewable and conventional generation connected to it, controlled by agents trained using Artificial Intelligence and guided by a reward function. This reward function establishes the objectives to be achieved in the simulation environment. The agents, consisting of trained deep neural networks, will know at any given moment the system’s needs that must be met to achieve the previously defined objectives.
