The CTA Innovation Observatory analyzes the key role of electrification and energy storage for renewables.

Ingelectus analyzed the importance of renewable energy storage for the development of the country’s industrial sector during the event “Beyond Renewables: The Strategic Role of Electrification and Storage,” organized by the CTA Innovation Observatory and sponsored by Iberdrola.

The gathering, held last Wednesday, October 14, in Seville, brought together over 40 professionals at the Inerco headquarters in the Seville TechPark. Discussions focused on the major challenges posed by energy storage and the ongoing transformation of the energy system toward a low-carbon economy, with a particular emphasis on electrification.Daniel Morales Wagner, CEO of Ingelectus, explained that centralized control in storage systems has become “a key element for the flexibility and stability of the electrical grid.” He participated in a roundtable discussion alongside José López, Director of Technology and Innovation at CEN Solutions; Francisco Rodríguez, Business Director for Energy Technologies and Decarbonization at Inerco; José Caparrós, CEO of Bluesolar; and Germán López, a senior consultant in Energy Innovation at CTA, who served as the moderator.

The forum was opened by Almudena Gómez Velarde, Secretary General for Industry and Energy for the Regional Government of Andalusia, who highlighted the need to align the development of energy storage with distribution networks and system requirements. “Andalusia must make progress in managing clean energy, putting it directly at the service of economic activity and the productive sector to help generate employment,” the Secretary General noted.

Meanwhile, Antonio Fernández, Iberdrola’s representative in Andalusia, pointed out that “electrification is a factor in competitiveness. For a company, electrifying its processes can mean optimizing energy use, increasing efficiency, and reducing costs. Ultimately, it is about leveraging clean, affordable, and efficient energy to drive the activity and growth of our businesses.” CTA Director General Elías Atienza highlighted that “the major challenge is no longer just producing more renewable energy, but rather being able to integrate, store, and use it efficiently whenever industry and the energy system require it.” In his view, “electrification and storage are, therefore, key components for advancing decarbonization, as well as an opportunity to drive innovation, investment, and business competitiveness.”

Eugenio Domínguez, Vice President of AEPIBAL (the Business Association for Batteries and Energy Storage), stated that “the great opportunity that energy storage presents for Spain lies not merely in installing more gigawatts, but in leveraging that deployment to develop domestic technological and industrial capacity.”

About the CTA Innovation Observatory
The CTA Innovation Observatory—launched in January 2026 with a report on innovation trends—serves as a radar for monitoring future opportunities through R&D&I (research, development, and innovation) and technology. Its objective is to provide innovative entities with insights and guidance regarding technological trends and opportunities, helping them enhance their competitiveness.
To this end, it offers direction on future steps through reports, expert lectures, thematic workshops, and the generation of informed perspectives. Ultimately, the CTA Innovation Observatory reinforces the foundation’s core mission: to contribute to scientific, technological, and social development, while fostering greater competitiveness among companies, professionals, and organizations.
